Enjoy a Cold-Brewed Iced Tea for the Perfect Summer Evening Beverage

Summer is here, and that means swimming, lazy Saturdays, and the comforting drone of cicadas in the evenings. And, as anyone who grew up looking forward to summertime knows, it means drinking delicious iced tea while sitting on the back deck waiting for the lightning bugs to come out.

Here's a great twist on the usual sun tea to which you may be accustomed: cold-brewed iced tea! Whether you’re enjoying a bergamot & jasmine blend, or sipping classic apricot or mango magic, cold-brewed iced tea tends to be sweeter and goes down more smoothly than traditional tea. Here’s why.

Cold-Brewed Iced Tea is Less Bitter Than Traditional Tea

Most of the time, when you make tea, you do so by steeping the leaves and other ingredients in hot water. However, what you may not know is that hot water actually activates substances called tannins in tea. It is these tannins that give the tea a bitter undertone.

In contrast, cold-brewed tea causes a different chemical reaction when the water hits the tea leaves. With fewer catechins, the bitterness is removed and you are left with a sweet and smooth drink. This means less sugar is necessary to sweeten it—meaning that it’s actually better for you!

Making Cold-Brewed Iced Tea

Fortunately, making cold-brewed tea is really easy! Get out the iced tea pitcher and fill it with cold water. Mix in the tea bags (or whole-leaf tea, if that’s your style) and then put the pitcher in the refrigerator.

Let it sit for 6 to 12 hours, depending on the type of tea you are making and the strength of the brew you desire. After that, strain out the tea, pour over ice, and enjoy!
